Tower Guide: From Slasher to Hydra
Lanefall TD has eight tower lines that grow from a free maze block and cheap basics into devastating specialists. This guide breaks down every path: when to build each tower, what role it fills, and how to counter opposing threats with the right defense.
The Three Build Options
When you tap an empty cell, you have three choices: the Depot (free maze block, non-attacking), the Slasher (7 gold, melee), or the Gun Turret (10 gold, ranged). Depots are yours to place freely; you get 15 per game to shape your maze before transitioning to attacking towers. Slashers deal crush damage with short range but fast attack speed, making them excellent for dense kill-zones. Gun Turrets deal pierce damage with longer range and steady firepower—pierce deals +30% bonus against light units and -30% penalty against heavy units, so ranged excels against swarms but struggles against tanks.
Basic Ladders: Growing Your Defense
Slasher upgrades to Slasher II (30 gold) and then Slasher III (120 gold); each tier sharply increases its melee damage. Gun Turret upgrades to Gun Turret II (40 gold), Gun Turret III (150 gold), and the rapid-fire Autocannon at tier 4. Build the basic ladders when you want steady, reliable defense without committing to a specialist role—early game is almost entirely basics, and you can maintain momentum with upgrades until you've saved 500+ gold for your first specialist tower.
When to Branch: The Tech System
Once you reach Slasher III or Gun Turret III, specialist paths open up. The Sapper mine line (500g) branches from Slasher III only. The other five lines (Reach, Burn, Siege, Artillery and Tar) each open at 1,500g from either basic, with no research to buy first. If the map is full of swarms, build a Flameguard and start climbing the Burn line. If single-target threats are coming, build a Beam for long-range focus fire.
Sapper → Sapper Prime → Master Sapper: Path Mines
The 500-gold branch off Slasher III. A Sapper arms nearby path cells with concealed mines that detonate on contact, and they hit hidden units that towers cannot see. Sapper Prime (6,000g) lays stronger mines that also hinder survivors, and Master Sapper (45,000g) blankets the approaches. Build it where clustered waves bunch up in a turn.
Tar Pit → Tar Basin → Tar Vortex: Slow Fields
Tar deals no damage. It slows everything in its field to 65%, then 50%, then 35% speed, so every tower around it gets more shots. It is the answer to speed spam, and it makes every other line in range better.
Beam → Beam Prime → Ascendant: Reach Energy
Reach tech unlocks Beam for long-range single-target energy damage, followed by Beam Prime and Ascendant. The first two tiers focus precise fire on targets from afar; Ascendant caps the same line with an area blast and slow. Use Reach when dangerous targets must take damage across a long stretch of maze, then use Ascendant's control against mixed waves.
Flameguard → Firestorm → Infernal Flame: Burn AoE and DoT Suppression
Flameguard ignites enemies in a 2-cell radius, applying burn that ticks for damage and suppresses regeneration. Firestorm intensifies the burn and widens the splash, while Infernal Flame fires five burning spores per volley. This is the definitive answer to Swarm sends and Divider/Broodmother children. Place it in a funnel and watch cheap units melt away even if dozens stack together.
Siege Mortar → Siege Breaker → Siege Sunderer: Buff Cleanse and Splash
Siege Mortar fires heavy shells with splash and a critical ability: attacks strip active buffs from enemy units. Siege Breaker expands that role, and Siege Sunderer caps the line with a larger cleansing barrage. This is your counter to support-heavy waves: when Overseers haste and Aegis wards protect a wave, Siege strips those buffs on hit.
Pounder → Pulverizer → Devastator → Hydra: Execute and Nuke Artillery
Pounder begins as reliable long-range artillery. Pulverizer and Devastator add executes that instantly finish wounded targets, while Hydra caps the line with a charged two-strike nuke. Place Artillery late in the kill-zone, where the earlier maze has softened units into execute range and Hydra can complete its charge against massive threats.
Counter-Picking Cheat Sheet
If opponents spam Swarm sends, build Flameguard burn or Sapper mines. If support units such as Overseers and Aegis are carrying waves, Siege strips their buffs. Against a giant Colossus or Revenant, use Beam's long-range focus fire and Artillery executes, with Hydra as the late-game nuke. Against coordinated light units, stack Gun Turrets and Autocannons for the pierce bonus. If heavy units dominate, prepare Slasher crush damage. The key is reading the send composition and shifting your tower mix to answer it.
